“Normal Physiologic Mechanism Leading to Erection”

The process starts with the brain registering a sexual stimulus. The brain then orchestrates a cascade of nerve signals that run through the spinal cord to the penis.

Here, the cavernosal nerves release nitric oxide, a gas that quickly penetrates the smooth muscle cells that form the penis’ spongy tissue. The nitric oxide causes the cells to produce a substance called the cyclic guanine mono phosphate (cGMP), which has an expansive, relaxing effect.  

The arteries feeding the penis expand and the smooth muscle relaxes, opening up tiny sacs in the erectile tissue that then swell with blood.

The two main chambers of the penis, the corpus cavernosa, fill and the organ becomes so engorged that the veins that usually drain away blood are pressed shut against the tough outer membrane of the erectile chambers. The result is erection.

Arteries (top) and veins (bottom) penetrate the long, filled carities running the length of the penis – the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum. Erection occurs when relaxed muscles allow the corpora cavernosa to fill with excess blood fed by the arteries, while drainage of blood through the veins is blocked.

However, nature, recognizing the disadvantage of having to experience a permanent erection, has provided the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) enzyme that breaks down the cGMP. When the sexual signal decreases, the PDE5 levels supersede those of the declining cGMP levels and the erection returns to the flaccid state.

The bioactivity of each constituent was tested, especially the inhibitory effect towards cAMP phosphodiesterase, which has an effect in controlling the body and a wide number of diseases. Therefore, it was planned to conduct research on the bioactivity of these chemical constituents in order to prove whether this herb is actually capable of enhancing the human health as stated.

Results

From testing the bioactivity of Flavonoid and Flavonoid glycoside, it was found that both of these compounds were effective in inhibiting cAMP phosphodiesterase. The result of inhibiting cAMP phosphodiesterase of both these compounds was greater than theophylline (IC50 = 615 µg/mL) and caffeine (IC50 = 420 µg/mL). The cAMP phosphodiesterase enzyme has a main function in the hydrolysis of the intracellular cAMP. Thus, papaverin, dipyridamole, caffeine and theophylline are effective when the cAMP phosphodiesterase is inhibited. Substances that inhibit cAMP phosphodiesterase are therefore capable of stimulating the functioning of the central nervous system (CNS) and stimulating the functioning of cells. Furthermore, substances that had an effect in inhibiting cAMP phosphodiesterase also take part in controlling numerous severe diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, hepatomas, psoriasis and possibly cancer. In addition, substances that inhibit phosphodiesterase also have effect in controlling platelet-aggregation inhibition.

Therefore Butea Superba Roxb is composed of substances that are effective in inhibiting the cAMP phosphodiesterase enzyme, which are very beneficial to the human body. History

Butea Superba (Red Kwao Krua) is a Twinning wood of long life herbal plant that exists only in Thailand from the central part, eastern part, and western part till the northern part of Thailand. This plant species can be found in the same habitant as Pueraria Mirifica and also the mountains area. The long-shape tubers were annually enlarged and accumulated at least 15 chemicals in the group of direct chain organic acid, sterol, sterol glycoside, flavonoid and flavonoid glycoside.

Butea Superba is a herb in the family Papilonaceae and has the characteristics of being a crawling vine that wraps itself around large trees. One branch has three leaves. The flowers are of a yellowish orange color and the plant grows in the open. The long roots of the plant are buried under the ground, similar to the roots of a yam.

This type of plant reproduces through seeds and the separation of its roots. It can be found growing in forests in the Northern regions, in the Eastern regions and along Kanchanaburi, Province of Thailand. The roots and stem of the plant are medicines used for strength and power.
