The skin is a complex living organ held together by the Extra Cellular Matrix, or the E.C.M. The E.C.M. of the skin tissue supports the organs securing the skin architect. It is the E.C.M. that plays an important role in cellular cohesion.
Two of the skin’s layers play a key function in how our skin looks. This is the epidermis and the underlying connective tissue called the dermis.
Epidermis
Placing our fingers on our skin, the layer our finger comes into contact first is the epidermis. The epidermis is the uppermost layer of the skin. This layer of the skin is directly above the dermis layer. New cells are created between these layers. The epidermis is continually displaced by the generations of new cells beneath them. As the cells mature, they move up to the top of the epidermis. The dead cells at the top layer are constantly shed. This process is continuous and our cells are renewed every 28 days. This is the most important layer of the skin as it perceives all environmental changes and sends signals to the other cells.
Dermis
The dermis is essential in producing the collagen fibres that gives the skin its elasticity and suppleness. More than six different types of collagen types make up the dermis. Scientists name the different collagen types by numbers, namely collagen I, III, IV, V, VI, VII, etc. The two most important types of collagen are collagen type I and type III.
Collagen
80 percent of the total dermal collagen in adult skin is Collagen I and Collagen III accounts for 15 percent. Collagen III is prevalent in the skin of babies and in women after pregnancy. Collagen III is also predominant in skin going through a wound healing process. Therefore, Collagen III is termed as the ‘restructuring’ collagen. The constitution of the dermal collagen changes throughout one’s life. A higher percentage of Collagen III is present in foetal and infant skin in comparison to adult skin. It is Collagen III that is most important in giving our skin the elasticity and suppleness coupled with beauty
Our Concerns
For years, women have been scouring countless shopping malls for the perfect product to suspend the inevitable ageing process, to maintain timeless beauty through flawless skin. In response, cosmetic houses have developed numerous forms of creams and lotion in pursuit of beauty. These cosmetic houses market their products as the essence of youth, containing anti-aging components.
What harms the skin?
Age will eventually reflect on the skin without proper care and treatment. This is the result of exposing our skin to several external factors, including that of the season, climate and environment. Numerous creations have been formulated in attempt to curtail the anti-aging process. These anti-aging concepts operate under the basis of protecting the skin from external factors, such as free radicals, moisture loss, and UV radiation, which prematurely age the skin. With this in mind, scientists have formulated numerous creams and lotions to stop the ageing process.
However, the crux of the problem remains unsolved, as nothing is done to ‘cure’ the aged skin. In other words, these concepts are formulated based only on the concept of protecting the skin, and not working on the concept of normalising the skin.
